The Larkspur Giant Imperial Blend, 'Consolida ambigua', has tall spires of elegant, tightly packed flowers. Shades of blue, pink, and white flowers are set atop of long stems. The Loves-Lies-Bleeding, 'Amaranthus caudatis', has crimson tassels that cascade to the ground from an exotic, showy, bushy plant. Dramatic, tropical, romantic, old-fashioned; they all describe Love-Lies-Bleeding. This plant was popular in colonial American and Victorian English gardens. The tassels can reach 18 inches and last for many weeks. Loves-Lies-Bleeding are also called tassel flower, prince's feather and red cockscomb. The red tassel is a colony of tiny, tightly packed flowers. The plant is bushy with sturdy, branching stems and dark green leaves. They bloom from summer to early fall.Love-Lies-Bleeding prefers full sun and rich, well drained soil. Water and fertilize regularly for longest tassels. Plant in the spring after last average frost date. They are excellent for fresh or dried flower arrrangements.

The Yarrow Commom White Milfoil, 'Achillea millefolium', is an incredibly fast growing lawn substitute or ground cover for dry areas. It is winter hardy in any climate. This Yarrow is a mat forming, weed suppressing ground cover. Common White Milfoils are fire resistant, drought tolerant, spreads rapidly, and is very cold tolerant. The small 1/8 inch pure white flowers appear in flat clusters atop long stems. They bloom from late spring into early fall.Common White Milfoils must have well drained or relatively dry soils. They cannot tolerate soggy soils. They also grow well in alkaline or acid soils. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date or late summer/early fall. Small plants will over winter well and have ahead start in the next spring. Plant in full sun for best results. This Yarrow is great in many climates from sea to mountains.

The Anise, 'Pimpinella anisum', was so enjoyed by the Romans, they could pay taxes with anise. The seeds and leaves are tasty and they are also useful for medicinal purposes. Anise seed has a sweet, licorice flavor and is used to intensify sweetness in cakes, pastries, and cookies. Also, either alone or combined with cinnamon or bay, compliments duck, pork, or fish. The leaves are also added to salads, soups, and vegetables. Tea or ground seeds are said to aid in digestion. Chewed, anise removes bad odors from the mouth.Anise is a tall plant with rounded leaves at the base and narrow leaves further up the upright stem. The yellowish-white flowers occur in umbels during the summer. Plant after the last spring frost when soil temperatures are warm. Anise prefers a protected spot because it grows spindly and is easily damaged by wind. The soil should be fairly rich and well drained.

The Beet Detroit Dark Red, 'Beta vulgaris', is a tender, sweet, tasty, and extremely nutritious root vegetable. The foliage is also highly regarded for taste and it has more iron than a hamburger. Home grown beets are delicious! The top growth is as tasty as chard or spinach. Detroit Dark Red Beets are great sliced and in salads. It is also a good container plant.The Detroit Red Beet is a blood red globe-shaped vegetable. The Beet is cold hardy, and seeds can germinate and grow in soil temperatures as low as 40 degrees. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Growing during hot temperature periods should be avoided. In mild climates, seed can be sown September for February harvest. Beets prefer deep, well drained soil with lots of organic material. They need to be kept moist.

The Cabbage Chinese Michihli ( haku-sai, pe-tsai), 'Brassica rapa (Pekinensis Group)', has such a mild, sweet flavor compared to regular cabbage that it can be used raw in salads. The Michihle has a texture between cabbage and lettuce. The leaves are mild and sweet, and do not cause digestion problems like regular cabbage. It can be grown nicely in 5 gallon containers. The Collards Georgia Southern, 'Brassica oleracea', is a heat and cold tolerant variety that is high in vitamins and minerals. This non-heading member of the cabbage family has huge cabbage-like, blue-green, slightly crumpled, juicy leaves. Collards are overlooked for gourmet greens, lettuce, and cabbage. Collards grow under more adverse conditions, and are very tasty when cooked or when young leaves are used in salads. Georgia Southerns are easy to grow and they make great container plants.Collards are excellent when served with corn bread and fried green tomatoes. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before last frost or in late summer, 10 to 12 weeks before first fall frost. They prefer rich, moist, well drained soil with lots of organic matter. In dry climates, water deeply once a week. The leaves of the collard can be harvested as needed.
